The company, where I was the chairman of the board, went through a difficult period and a change of management. I had to get behind the wheel. Under other circumstances, overcoming this extraordinary situation would have been more difficult both personally and professionally. I probably would have felt a lot more uncertainty. Primarily, I am sure that EMBA studies helped me to work on myself.

Strategy

1 semester
The module provides a conceptual framework for viewing and understanding strategy and developing your strategic thinking. It helps participants acquire and put to use practical tools and experience in dealing with strategic issues. A thread that will run through the discussions and exercises during classes is the notion that strategy is all about making difficult choices. Perspectives of business strategy and knowledge about how it is conceptualized and practiced will be offered in this module.

Its design is guided by the premise that top level managers are constrained by the firm’s strategy, its environment and its resources and, at the same time, strategy enhances their ability to manage, leverage and to ultimately change these constraints in ways that create opportunities that would otherwise not exist. Strategy module helps participants to develop and implement cross-functional decisions towards the attainment of the organizations’ vision, mission and objectives using strategic management principles.

A Journey of Leadership Transformation

1st and 2nd semester
The aim of this module is to prepare Executive MBA students for leadership roles (nationally and internationally); specifically, to be able to lead in a multi-stakeholder context and cope successfully with the complex aspects of leadership challenges at different levels (individual, organizational and beyond). Students will acquire theoretical and practical knowledge of leadership, explore what it means to be an effective, agile and responsible leader and develop advanced leadership competencies at horizontal (e.g. leadership skills) and vertical (e.g. advanced cognitive abilities) levels. One of the most important goals of the Leadership module is to create a thought-provoking and very supportive thinking and conversational environment for the students, where they will be encouraged to share their tacit knowledge about leadership, be open to considering new theories, principles and models, and develop critical thinking skills in order to debate the advantages and disadvantages of existing and emerging popular leadership principles. Students are expected to define their own vision of their leadership style and philosophy and build the necessary mindset and skillset for that. The module was designed to evoke and support tangible behavioral and philosophical leadership changes in the students, so all of the lectures, conversations and assignments will serve that purpose.

This module provides a critical review of the key concepts, models, theories and practitioner approaches relating to leadership in organizations. During the module, participants will be familiarized with the most up-to-date and relevant practical methods for identifying, analyzing and developing their 21st century leadership philosophy and style.

Illustrations and the application of leadership principles will be demonstrated through experiential exercises, skill and mindset development practices, and a 12-month transformative learning piece embedded within the body of the module. Personal and professional growth will form a common theme throughout the module.

International Consulting Project instead of Master Thesis

The Executive MBA program culminates with a capstone module that helps to integrate business theory and practice taught in the classroom through the application of newly acquired knowledge and skills with a real-world business objective.

Participants have the opportunity to engage in a real business consulting project in Johannesburg and Cape Town (South Africa). During the visit, participants work in teams in the organization of their choice and demonstrate their problem solving, creativity, diagnosis and decision-making abilities and apply general business, management, change management and innovation knowledge.

The module draws participants into a cohesive team, developing peer support and team learning in the context of an organization-based consultancy task under the supervision of an academic member of the faculty. In this way, it develops their investigative and evaluative skills as well as increases their understanding of the business context of their chosen area of expertise.

Individually, this module enables each participant to reflect on his/her learning journey in the Executive MBA program and apply this to his/her own career and occupation.
