On 28 September, ISM Executive School invites executives to an evening with Edward Lucas, writer, security expert and Founder-Director of the Baltic International Security Centre, and Prof Dr Dalius Misiūnas, President of ISM University of Management and Economics, for a conversation about how the Baltic states are perceived in the West – and why it is time to challenge some of the narratives that continue to shape those perceptions.
The discussion will explore how outdated assumptions and negative narratives – from labels such as “tiny” and “ex-Soviet” to portrayals of the Baltics as fragile – shape perceptions of the region and affect security, resilience, investment and economic confidence. It will also turn the question around: what can the West learn from the Baltic states, and what should the Baltics themselves do to strengthen their voice and influence?
About Edward Lucas
Edward Lucas is a writer and security expert with decades of experience covering Central and Eastern Europe. His work spans European security, geopolitics, cyber-security, espionage and information warfare.
A former senior editor at The Economist, he has covered the politics, economics and security of Central and Eastern Europe since 1986 and worked as a foreign correspondent across Europe and the Baltic states. Today, he is Founder-Director of the Baltic International Security Centre, where his work focuses on strengthening the Baltic voice in European debates and challenging misconceptions about the region.
His long-standing connection with the Baltics gives him a distinctive perspective on how the region is perceived abroad – and what Europe can learn from its resilience, readiness and ambition.
