HUMAN CAPITAL RESOURCE EMERGENCE FOR ROBOTIC SURGERY DEPLOYMENT IN HEALTHCARE

Prof. Dr. Ilona Bučiūnienė (ISM University of Management and Economics, Social Sciences, Management, S 003) supervised the dissertation from 2019 to 2025.

The doctoral dissertation will be defended at the Scientific Council of Management at ISM University of Management and Economics on September 10, 2025, at 11 A.M. in ISM room 210.

Summary:

The dissertation examines the process of implementing emerging technologies, particularly minimally invasive robotic surgery, in healthcare organizations. Based on semi-structured interviews with 36 surgeons from 13 countries, the study reveals the importance of Human Capital Resource Emergence (HCRE) for the successful integration of such technologies. It emphasizes the need to coordinate the work of clinical teams and robotic surgery specialists to ensure implementation efficiency and patient safety. The research resulted in the development of a technology deployment framework for healthcare organizations, which can serve as a guideline for future initiatives. The dissertation also expands human capital theory, demonstrating that HCRE is a multifaceted and underexplored concept, the understanding of which is essential for overcoming technology adoption barriers in healthcare.
