Academic Writing Guidelines

Academic writing

Here you will find guidelines for the use of the APA style in the academic work of the ISM, which will help you to prepare your written assignments correctly. The APA formatting and citation style is commonly used in business, communication, psychology, and other sciences. It defines the basic formatting, citation, and lists requirements for academic written work, which must be fulfilled in all kinds of assignments prepared at ISM University.

Academic writing – APA Style

Academic writing is a particular kind of writing in which certain principles need to be followed. There are several major areas of academic writing, which students need to master:

1. General writing style – grammar, clarity, readability, and bias-free writing
2. Text and document formatting requirements
3. Attribution of sources – citing and referencing works of other authors published in journals, books, online portals, on company websites, etc.

The 7th edition of the APA Style provides guidance on all three areas of academic writing listed above. ISM University of Management and Economics requires students to follow the style, except for a few minor differences in formatting, which you will find provided in your Final Thesis Requirements document.

F. A. Q

Why do I need to familiarise myself with the 7th edition of the APA Style?

It makes your writing style clearer and more inclusive and helps formatting to be consistent across all assignments. However, most importantly, by following the guidelines you avoid intentionally, or unintentionally plagiarising other authors’ works.
The University takes academic ethics very seriously and does not tolerate any plagiarism. For more information about the types of plagiarism and disciplinary action in case a violation occurs, see the information on the Committee on Ethics page: Appendix I. Academic Ethics Requirements for Students.

Here are the main changes that were introduced in the 7th Edition:

  • Page header includes only the page number, placed in the top right-hand corner.
  • The title of the paper should be written in capital case, emboldened, centred, double spaced, in the upper part of the paper.
  • Title page should include the following information:
    • Student name, affiliation, course number and name, instructor’s name, due date.
  • All section labels are emboldened and centred, e.g., Abstract, References.

What are the differences between the ISM University formatting requirements and the APA Style?

All the requirements set in the 7th Edition of the APA Style are applied, except line spacing: ISM University requires the use of 1.5-point line spacing instead of double spacing.
