DATA-DRIVEN DECISIONS: CHANGES ON EXECUTIVE ROLE

Prof. Dr. Vita Akstinaitė (ISM University of Management and Economics, Social Sciences, Management, S 003) supervised the dissertation from 2021 to 2025. The doctoral dissertation will be defended at the Scientific Council of Management at ISM University of Management and Economics on January 27, 2026, at 11 A.M. in ISM room 209.

Summary:

Decision-making is a core activity of every organisation, with executives as the main decision-makers on whom the organisation’s success depends. To accelerate decision-making, managers invest in new technologies that use historical data and forecasts derived from it, facilitating a transition to data-driven decisions. The aim of this dissertation is to identify how data-driven decisions change the role of executives. A mixed research methodology (quantitative – survey, qualitative – in-depth interviews, and qualitative – action-based research) is applied, ensuring that the results of each study complement and expand on the others. The research revealed that data-driven decisions are changing the role of executives. Firstly, data-driven decisions increase the quality and speed of decisions, as well as the independence and freedom of action. Also, it reduces decision-making risks and yields more accurate forecasts. Data-driven decisions also affect the managerial roles defined by Mintzberg’s (1974) classification. It was determined that complex management of organisational changes is required to implement data-driven decisions within an organisation, and that these changes must be implemented according to a specific course of action. Based on the obtained research results, a model for implementing organisational changes, specifically for the implementation of data-driven decisions, is proposed.
